With the imminent regrouping of its two Brussels sites, Edith Cavell & Park Léopold, into a single site, scheduled to open in late 2017, it was very important for CHIREC to achieve the optimal design for its logistical services. This included a particular focus on the design of the warehouse, the associated processes, and organization within the warehouse, aimed at ensuring an excellent and efficient restocking of care units. The achievement of a faultless supply of not only medical, but also non-medical materials to the various care units and administrative departments undoubtedly contributes to the high-quality patient care.
1. Workload model
In order to estimate the workload in the future warehouse as realistically as possible, a detailed process analysis was first performed to identify the various tasks performed by warehouse staff. This involved making accurate situational analyses on the basis of several site visits to the current hospitals. A full picture of the future organisation was achieved by reflecting the current activities onto the future hospital site and adding in other activities. Using time measurements and estimations, it was possible to anticipate staff requirements in the future.
2. Design warehouse lay-out
In order to guarantee an optimized goods flow, starting from delivery in the bay and ending with the use of goods in the care units, the focus was to design the warehouse in the most efficient manner. This took into consideration the current and future consumables, the zones that were needed in the warehouse for the various product groups, current and future legislative requirements (a separate sterile zone), and the prevailing safety standards. Existing architecture was used as the basis and the final objective was to optimise the use of the existing area in order to maximise the efficiency of the goods flow. Several scenarios were presented to the directors to achieve this.
Not only was the mathematical model submitted, allowing an estimation of the workload in the future warehouse on the one hand, and which can be easily updated, on the other hand, thanks to the fact it can be parameterised, but the floor plan for the warehouse design was submitted as well.
